The Morning After - College Style

It's Sunday morning and you wake up in a guy's room you don't know all that well, or maybe even at all, and are scrambling to figure out what to do with yourself.  Here are a few tips to guide you through this excruciating situation you definitely didn't have in mind the night before:

1. Above all - be CONFIDENT.  The more cool, calm, and collected you seem about the situation, the more he will respect you and it won't be weird the next time you see him. Easier said than done, but if you can at least pretend you're confident (the, "What, I do this all the time!?" vibe), it'll go a long way for those awkward dining hall run-ins.

2. DON'T cuddle - it's weird.  Don't cuddle with someone unless you actually know them.

3. DON'T linger, but don't be obviously self-conscious about your lingering (5-10 minutes isn't lingering).

4. DON'T put his clothes on.

5. DON'T say things like "last night was fun"... awkward.

6. DO make a bit of small-talk, maybe a joke from the night before, and don't overstay your welcome.  If you don't really know the person, stay a maximum of 15 minutes after you woke up (morning breath, left-over makeup, and the obvious awkwardness are only enjoyable for so long.  If he wants to hang out more, he'll text you).  If you do know the person or seem to be getting along, maybe a half an hour or so of waking up and talking would be nice. But, again, if he wants to see you more he will text you or you will text him, so just let the morning after be what it is and don't expect much.

7. Double, triple, quadruple check you didn't leave anything.

8. If he tries to get you to stay and you don't want to, make up an excuse like:

  • "I told my friend I'd get lunch with her!"
  • "I have a meeting."
  • "I need to get to work, big paper due tomorrow!"
  • "My family is coming into town."

8. If-all-else-fails-get-me-out-of-here plan of action:

  • Wake up, and even if he's sleeping begin to get dressed.
  • If he's awake - smile, maybe say a sentence or two of small talk, and exit.
  • If he's asleep - give him a little shake to say goodbye, and exit.

Always leave a friendly, confident impression no matter how long you stay.  Be the bigger person - it's sexy.
